I've finally decided to go to AN for the first time (with the 'push' of a friend who bought a ticket for me) and I thought, 'hey, it'll probably be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so why not go full out?' So I made a cosplay outfit :) At first, I wanted to do Mulan, because well... I'm asian (super original, right?), but decided that I like One Piece too much and wanted to try out something different and something that not a lot of people have cosplayed (Luffy, Nami, Robin, etc.) , and not too hard to make for a first-timer. So I decided on a genderbend Sanji! (aka Sanjiko or fem!Sanji) inspired by this particular design which seemed most prevalent: *The charater on the bottom-right >>> In the Making & Costs: |
I bought a blue shirt, and a long black dress at a thrift store to start. Reformed the shirt by cutting off its long sleeves, made it fit my body shape (it was so loose, but it was the perfect colour so it was worth it), added gold buttons on the sleeves and drew in the line pattern with a simple ruler and a ballpoint pen. With the dress, I tore it apart so that I basically had a lot of plain black fabric to work with. So with that, I made the vest and skirt from scratch and added buttons and zippers and so on. Here's a breakdown of costs:
Shirt & Dress (for fabric) - 9$
Shoes - 16$
8 Gold Buttons (at Michael's) - 8$
Light Blonde Wig (eBay) - 15$
Accessories (eBay) - 4$
------------------------------------------------- Total: 52$
The costs weren't too bad. I probably could've saved a bit by using shoes I already had, but I knew I wouldn't last more than 3 hours in the convention with stiletto heels *nods*
Thankfully I had an awesome friend at hand, Charles Chan, who is a professional photographer - who was willing to do a photoshoot of my cosplay! He's absolutely fantastic. Super nice, accommodating, friendly, and very talented! You can check out his website: http://charlescchan.com/ If you would like to hire a professional photographer in Toronto, let him know! :)
